Band-O-Rama

Dear parents,

It's that time of the year once again!  Band-O-Rama is on Thursday at 7:00 PM in the Carson High School gym.  Bring your friends, family, co-workers, and let's fill the gym!  This event is always a great event, where we get to see all the school band programs working together.  Here are some details for the kids:
  • Wednesday: All band members must bring their instruments home after school.
  • Thursday morning: 7:30 AM call time at the Carson High School gym (in seats, ready to play).  They must find their own way there. Parents are welcome to listen.  Bring instruments, music, and all schoolwork they need for that day.  Wear SSA.  Following rehearsal, students will travel back to CMS on buses for the rest of their classes.
  • Thursday afternoon: All band students must bring their instruments home after school.
  • Thursday evening: 6:30 PM call time at the Carson High School gym (in seats, ready to play). Students need to wear concert dress.  Leave large instrument cases in your cars.
  • Concert begins at 7 PM and should end around 8:30 PM.
  • Any students that can stay after the event to help with tear down are welcome.
I will be updating the newsletter again with all other items on Friday.  Chili Bingo Night is right around the corner!

Prep Week

Dear Parents,

I hope everybody enjoyed their long weekend.  Now, it's time to get back to work.  This week is where band members will prepare to perform in Band-O-Rama, and select strings students will prepare to perform in Solo and Ensemble.

Valentine Gram Results / Spring Trip Payment Dealine

The Valentine Gram fundraiser earned the Advanced Band a net profit of $410, which is enough to reduce every student's total spring trip payment by $15 each.  Thank you to your students who all contributed towards making this fundraiser successful.  I also moved the spring trip first payment deadline: Feb. 20.  Please send money (preferably check payable to CMS) with your student by that time.

Is There Such A Thing As Normal?

Dear Parents,

Congratulations to Jazz Band!  They put on an amazing performance in Nightingale Concert Hall on the campus of UNR.  They performed on a beautiful stage and had a great feedback clinic following their performance.

Honor Band was also a huge success, with 21 of our students showing up on time, prepared, enthusiastic, and well-behaved.  I have a group picture, but it is missing one of our students.  After I "photoshop him in" I will share it.

Practice Logs

Practice logs are due on Tuesday for band members and Friday for strings members.

Honor Band, Jazz Band, and Valentine Grams (oh my)

Dear Parents,

There is a lot going on this week for folks in Jazz Band and Honor Band.  Students will have a substitute on Thursday and Friday, and should bring their instruments.  Here's what each class has been up to this past week:

Concert Band has been working on all Band-O-Rama music, including sight reading the mass piece, March from "First Suite."  Students are also learning and passing a test on their B-Flat major scale.
Intermediate Band has sight read Whale Warriors and March from "First Suite."  Many individuals are having difficulties with counting and entrances in Festivo.  Please make sure they're practicing at home and let me know if they aren't, or if they need extra help.
Advanced Band has learned all music for Band-O-Rama and they are beginning to work on Festival music.  They are making great progress and continue to show a strong work ethic.
Advanced Strings students have been putting together Fantasia 2000 and Concerto Grosso.  It has been great working on all of Fantasia with these students.  We may be performing at a festival in March, with more information to be announced.
Beginning Band is working towards being able to play Imperium straight through.  They will be receiving March from "First Suite" this week, so they will have all Band-O-Rama songs by Wednesday.
Beginning Strings has made it through half of Classic Bits and Pieces.  We are working on learning the second half, along with music from the method book.

Last week, we had the Jazz Extravaganza, which featured our Carson Middle School Jazz Band, along with Carson High School's Jazz Band and the Mile High Jazz Band.  In addition to a great performance, we had a raffle drawing that raised $100.
