Closure
Dear Parents,
After quite an activity-filled few months, we can now breathe a deep sigh and revel in the accomplishments that our students achieved. What a great semester this has been! As I leave for Chicago for my music educators conference, I wanted to leave you with a few items.

- Thank you for an INCREDIBLE concert last Thursday. Students all performed their best and showed me amazing amounts of excellence.

- There will be no jazz band this week.
- Three classes achieved their practice log goals, and they do not need to do practice logs over the winter break: Advanced Band, Advanced Strings, Intermediate Band. They will have a chance to submit practice logs for extra credit between Jan. 1-4 if they wish.
- Three classes did not hit their practice log goals, and they must complete practice logs over winter break: Beginning Band, Beginning Strings, Concert Band. These will be able to be submitted between Jan. 1-4.
- Here are the percentages:
- Advanced band: 83%
- Advanced strings: 80%
- Beginning band: 61%
- Beginning strings: 56%

Home Stretch
Dear Parents,
That's right! It's the home stretch for the semester! First and foremost, this is my last week at CMS...until next year. I'm going to be in Chicago for a music educator conference from December 15-19. For that reason, all make-up tests and those that want to improve a grade on a playing test are due by Friday, Dec. 12.
We have a lot to celebrate over the past week:

We have a lot to celebrate over the past week:
- The winter concert, featuring all young groups, went very well, with an outstanding audience and many compliments.
- Advanced Band played Christmas carols on Friday in Telegraph Square to a large and enthusiastic crowd.
- Marching Band put on a great Christmas parade in front of thousands of fans, followed by some fun times in the mall. Thank you so much for the overwhelming support from chaperones!
Upcoming Event
December 11: Winter Concert, Part 2
This concert features Advanced Strings, Intermediate Band, Advanced Band and Jazz Band. Call time is 5:30 PM for Advanced Strings and 6:00 PM for everybody else at the Carson City Community Center. The concert begins at 6:00 PM and should end by 7:30 PM. Additional details may be found HERE I encourage everybody from Concert Band, Beginning Band, and Beginning Strings to attend. They will be in these groups next year.
Weather permitting, Advanced Band may go to the Governor's Mansion to perform for the Share Your Christmas food drive on Friday, December 12. If this happens, I'll let you know.
Practice Logs
This week, practice logs were abysmal. I talked with each class, stressing the importance of not just practicing, but practicing smart. With 3 days before a concert for some of our students, I had two groups play: the group who practiced and the group who didn't practice. There was a really noticeable difference. No matter what happens, the concert on Thursday will be very good, but I worry that students might rely on the hard work of those who practice. Everybody needs to contribute equally.

Life Lessons Learned from a Music Ensemble
Dear Parents,
During this brief bit of down time in our student's busy musical lives, I thought I'd share an article. Although the title mentions marching band, all students in all ensembles at CMS experience these same lessons.
Feel free to discuss this with your kids. You may leave a comment here, as well. I'm very interested to see if any of you notice a difference in these qualities from your children.
"In this post I’ll highlight 18 lessons that marching band teaches kids.
Music. Music affects the brain. Hearing it. Playing it. Especially playing it. The math involved in playing music keeps the brain active and growing. Music can uplift you when you’re down or dragging.
Neurological multi-tasking. Marching and playing at the same time is challenging, and marching band members meet the challenge of marching at one tempo while playing at another. The neuronal connections grown in marching band will benefit the students throughout life, for multi-tasking through college and in the workplace, and for multi-tasking as a parent.
Discipline. Long rehearsals. Memorize drill. Memorize music. Early is on time; on time is late. The discipline you experience and practice is a foundation for discipline later, through college, in the workplace, as a parent. The discipline of being a part of a team like a marching band is experience that you’ll take with you through life.
Teamwork. Every part of a team is important. Every part contributes. There is amazing satisfaction in coming together with a team, working hard alongside and with a team, to perform a show. And the teamwork is very different from that of a sports team, where the goal is to defeat opponents in games. In sports, teams try to go after an opponent’s weakness and to shut down an opponent’s strong scorer. The teamwork in marching band is about individual and group self-improvement, competing with self, comparing results with self over time.
Camaraderie. Shared experiences over time build relationships and friendships. A job transfer moved our family across the country as my sophomore was ending her 8th grade year. We moved in time for her to attend every practice with the marching band. She began her freshman year in a new school in her new state with a posse of friends from the marching band. Marching band was a wonderful bridge between two states
Time management. From July through November, a good chunk of time will be consumed by rehearsals, football games, and contests. You give up a lot of computer time, video game time, free time during those months. Time management experience will serve you well throughout life.
Sacrifice. Band members get an opportunity to see the benefits of sacrificing what you want to do (computer chats, shopping, goofing off) for the good of the team. There is personal satisfaction in knowing as you are walking off the field together that the group had a good show. Seeing your scores improve throughout the season or from year to year is rewarding. Awards, medals, trophies from festivals and competitions are sweet tangible payoffs to the sacrifices band members make throughout the season.
Resilience. Students mess up. They keep going. Judges make mistakes or make calls we don’t agree with. The band members keep going. Students learn that a bobble or a fall during a competition is not the end of the world. Resilience is a hot topic in psychology today, and being able to bounce back after a mistake or setback is an important skill throughout life, a skill that develops by being practiced and experienced, and (fortunately or unfortunately), there are lots of opportunities to practice in marching band. We parents watched in dismay as our band experienced a tempo tear during prelims of a competition and yet the band recovered and finished strong. I was as proud of them for their collective resiliency as I was by the fact that we made finals that day.
Flexibility combined with creative problem solving. Our band staff embraces feedback from judges’ commentaries. Instead of rigidly insisting that the show they put together at camp in July is perfect, they take constructive criticism seriously and make adjustments where needed. Our staff model flexibility and creative problem solving for the students; the students practice flexibility in tweaking the show until the show is the way the directors want it.
Manners and respect. Band members practice the habits of manners and respect. Students represent both school and community when at a performance or competition. Our band is expected to be respectful in all situations, from rehearsals to football games to competitions. While the parents are going nuts in the stands, the band members on the field remain perfectly still in situations where we all know they wanted to dance and scream.
Generosity. Our kids applaud other bands at competitions. Our parents applaud other bands at competitions. Applauding another band takes nothing away from our own band.
Education and history. The fine arts camp my daughter attended during two summer vacations names cabins after composers. Imagine our delight to make the connection that she stayed in the cabin named for Bizet and last year played a melody from Carmen with the marching band.
Trust. When you’re marching backwards, or sideways, you must trust that your bandmates are doing what they’re supposed to do so that you don’t crash into them on a trek across the football field during your precision marching.
Lots of practice hours. In his book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell tells us that 10,000 hours of practice at anything = success. During marching season, marching band students get many more hours of playing music than most non-marching students.
Music programs give our students practice and experience in skills that reach far beyond musical notes and instruments. The kids don’t realize that they are getting experience in so many non-musical life-skills that will have positive impacts as they become adults. Our band director often quotes the Harris Poll that found that 73% of CEOs from Fortune 1000 companies were involved in music programs in high school. When I think about the different areas of development that marching band reaches, I can see why. I am glad that my children have the opportunity that I did not have and watching them and their friends grow into adulthood will be a joy to watch from a front row seat as we parents and teachers see the ways in which marching impacts their lives over the years."

Concert Preparations
Dear Parents,
I have some reminders about honor band auditions, practice logs, and our winter concerts. Besides that, not much news this week.
This week's focus in class is exclusively winter concert music. Students need to be sure they learn notes and rhythms for their parts at home so they can come to rehearsal to learn how it fits in with the group, as a whole. If they do this, we can make great music out of these songs!
Honor Band auditions will take place at lunch and after school all this week. The audition material is mandatory for advanced band members as a playing test, but optional for them to put in to be considered for honor band. Results will be posted on Tuesday, November 25.
Practice logs will be available to submit on Thursday and Friday. They are due at the same time, 11:59 PM this Friday. If all classes earn an 80% or higher, they will be awarded a week without practice logs, which will come in handy during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.
December 4: Winter Concert, Part 1 - 5:30 PM call time in the Community Center for Beginning Band, Concert Band, and Beginning Strings. Concert begins at 6:00 PM.
December 5: Carson City Tree Lighting - 6:00 PM call time at the skating rink for advanced band members. Anyone else is welcome to come and cheer us on in this festive event.
December 6: Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade - Call time TBA in band room for intermediate and advanced band members. Details and entry information is forthcoming.
December 11: Winter Concert, Part 2 - 5:30 PM call time in the Community Center for Intermediate Band, Advanced Strings, Advanced Band, and Jazz Band. Concert begins at 6:00 PM.

Weekly Update 11/8
Dear Parents,
All classes have had a great week of continuing to work towards learning their Winter concert music. On Friday, each class underwent a playing test. We also had 16 students play along with the Blue Thunder Marching Band at Carson High School on Friday night. The Veterans Day Parade is a go for Tuesday. Call time for Intermediate and Advanced Band students is 7:30 AM in the band room. I will be there at 7:15 for anybody who would like to come early and help set up for breakfast. I will send a final reminder email to just the parents of the participating students with further details on Monday. I really appreciate everybody who signed up to help. We still need the following:

The Marching Band came together and performed very well at the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. I'm so impressed with everything that came together to make this parade such a great memory for all the students!
- Several parents treated the band to a delicious hot breakfast in the band room. I can't thank you enough. The food was delicious and we had very happy kids.
- The uniforms looked great! Thank you, parents, for getting the kids in and out of the uniforms and French braiding the hair so well! (had I attempted the braiding, they'd look like rats' nests)
- I also appreciate the Nevada Day Parade president allowing us to arrive at the parade location at a later time. It cut our wait time down from 4 hours to 1 1/2 hours.
- The band members were very positive and excited throughout the event. They showed a terrific amount of pride and camaraderie.

Dear Parents,
Intermediate Band and Advanced Band will be participating in two parades in the next three weeks, and all other ensembles are working on new musical skills and new music for their winter concerts in December.

It Takes A Village
Hello Again,
We just wrapped up a successful concert, and are gearing up for an eventful November. I also have Nevada Day Parade information, hot off the presses!
Beginning Strings, Beginning Band, Advanced Strings, and Concert Band put on their first concert of the year. For the beginning classes, this was their first concert ever, and hopefully one that they will never forget! I still remember my first concert as a very exciting experience. More details about this concert later.
Intermediate Band received their last piece for the winter concert, "Still, Still, Still," and are working to improve their skills on reading/performing rhythms. Students are also making finishing musical touches on Battle Born for the Nevada Parade.
Advanced Band is continuing to push forward with all their music at such an incredible rate. I may be giving them another piece for the winter concert before too long.
Jazz Band deserves an update too. I have incredible instrumentation for this group of volunteers who come to school as close to 7:00 AM as possible to play music together. Additionally, they have learned 5 pieces of music, with more to come shortly. I'll begin including updates about this group on a weekly basis.
Nevada Day Parade Information
I have Nevada Day Parade information for all students in Intermediate and Advanced Bands. Since this parade showcases the excellence of the music program at CMS to thousands of people, it is imperative that we work together to help support the students. As the saying goes, it takes a village... I have specific details located right here and students will receive hard copies on Monday.

Recap: Fall "Oktoberfest" Concert and Spaghetti Feed, October 15
Our first concert and first annual spaghetti feed was a huge success! All groups performed at a level never seen this early in the school year. In addition, we raised over $900! Thank you everyone for your donations and support. Ms. Simkins would like to send a special thank you to the amazing cooking and cleaning crew, without whom this event would not have been possible. Our next phase of our room upgrades will now be possible. I'll be purchasing music folder storage for the students this weekend!

Weekly Update 10/6
Happy Monday!
This week's newsletter includes many links to important events, as well as something fun for you all to view at home. Here's what your students have accomplished this last week:
Concert Band has chosen all their music for the fall concert. Their next job is to continue refining their tone and making everything even more musical.
Intermediate Band has received three of their four winter concert pieces, "Snow Day," "Winter Frolic," and "We Need A Little Christmas." Students also learned and performed their A Flat major scale as a playing test. We continue to work on Battle Born from time to time.
Advanced Band has received two of their four winter concert pieces, "Three Minute Nutcracker" and "We Need A Little Christmas." Students also learned and performed their A Flat major scale as a playing test. They will receive the rest of their winter concert music this week.
Advanced Strings has a major celebration of achieving 100% on their practice logs as a class. With all music chosen and well-rehearsed, they're now working on making everything even more musical.
Beginning Band has also chosen all their music for the fall concert. Last Tuesday, Dr. Snider and Dr. Davis from UNR came and did a master class, focusing on tone quality and improving pitch accuracy with the brass instruments. There are some days when these guys don't sound like a beginning band anymore (in a good way).
Beginning Strings has learned their D major scale, with all students receiving a passing score on Friday's playing test! They will show that off, in addition to several other pieces, at next week's fall concert.
Upcoming Event: Oktoberfest, "Oktober" 11 (aka Parents' Afternoon Out!)

Marching Band: Part of Something Amazing
On a personal note: Last weekend was homecoming. Going back to play in the alumni band always brings back wonderful memories from when I marched in college. From 2004-2011, I was a member of the band, with the last 2 years being spent as a graduate assistant who helped teach and run it. Like any activity in life, it takes a lot of effort and many hours to pull off. Back when I was in bands, I remember being so hot that I thought I was going to die, but I ran back to my spot anyway. I remember being so exhausted for afternoon rehearsals, but I enjoyed every minute of it (partially because it got my mind off the inevitable hours of studying that consumed that night). I remember being so sick of playing the same three songs each and every day, but I played them anyway. I remember them like they were yesterday. Band is working hard with the same people, fighting through the bad days, and celebrating the good ones together.
When I spoke to another young middle school teacher at homecoming, she and I relived those days in band that we shared as students. Then, we marveled at how incredible it is that your 11, 12, and 13 year old children are doing the same things. As they continue working towards their goals of marching in front of thousands of cheering spectators at our parades, I'd like to share a link from homecoming, where I had the chance to play once again with the Wolf Pack Marching Band, in front of 32,000 fans.
Have a great week!
Mr. Jacques

Marching Forward
Dear Parents,
We are beginning to hit the busier part of our fall season, with many fun activities just around the corner. Here's an update on last week's news:
Upcoming Event: Oktoberfest, "Oktober" 11 (aka Parents' Afternoon Out!)
On October 11 the Boosters will be hosting an Oktoberfest for the enjoyment of those 21 and older. Tickets will be $20 and will include a sausage, beer/wine tasting, and a souvenir mug. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the event. We are looking into a way to sell tickets online, so please watch for an email and a flyer coming home with details once we decide.
Upcoming Event: Fall Concert and Spaghetti Feed, October 15
On October 15, we will have a spaghetti feed fundraiser, as well as a concert to showcase our orchestra program, as well as our beginning band and concert band. The spaghetti feed will begin at 6:00 PM, with the concert beginning at 6:30 PM. The cost to eat is $5 per plate, or $15 for a family of $4, but you may still come and watch your students for free.
We are beginning to hit the busier part of our fall season, with many fun activities just around the corner. Here's an update on last week's news:
- The 1st annual Parent Preview and Barbecue on September 27 was a success. Last spring, the high school band director, Bill Zabelsky, donated about $30,000 worth of band uniforms to our program. I then had them cleaned and embroidered with our school letters. On Saturday, the CMS Marching Band debuted them to the parents with a showcase performance and a family barbecue. The kids wore them with pride and put on a great show for the parents. I forgot to introduce the drum majors, so I'll do it here. Regan Lowe, Adelynn Puett, and Jacob Richetta will each get to lead the band through one of the parades this fall. Thank you to everyone who helped with this project. A special thank you to the students who showed a lot of pride and professionalism, while still managing to have fun!
- Dr. Snider and Dr. Davis, tuba and horn professors from UNR, visited Concert band, Intermediate band, and Advanced band for a workshop. The students had a chance to hear them perform and discuss techniques on breathing and practicing. They personally complimented me on the atmosphere in the room. Students were extremely polite and had a great experience.
- Beginning band, Concert band, Beginning strings, and Advanced strings are preparing for their fall concert on October 15. Details about this concert are forthcoming.
- Advanced band and Intermediate band are going to be receiving some winter concert music this week. 'Tis the season!
New Fundraiser - Dolan Automotive's 2014 Class Project - Update
Thank you to the amazing contributions we have received so far. I cannot thank you enough! We are 44% to our goal of $2500. Keep spreading the word!!

Students who do not turn in a practice log will be required to take a playing test on Monday to earn up to half credit. The material will be chosen from what they have been asked to practice the previous week. This week, I was surprised by how many students did not turn one in, with only two classes (Intermediate Band and Beginning Strings) that did better than last week:
63% Concert Band
71% Intermediate Band
55% Advanced Band
35% Advanced Strings
48% Beginning Band
74% Beginning Strings
Marching Rehearsals
Marching rehearsals will continue on Tuesdays for all intermediate and advanced band members from 2:45-4:30 PM. Now that they're ready, we will begin marching through the neighborhood and building their endurance.

Another week already? Those four day work weeks tend to fly by! Here's how your students are doing as we approach week 4:
- All students are signed up to use SmartMusic in the classroom (read below for more information)
- Students submitted their first practice logs (read below for more information)
- The car wash was a great success, raising $1000 for our program.
- Beginning band students can play 3 notes
- Beginning strings students can play in rhythm on open strings and first/second finger notes.
- Concert band students did really well on their first playing test that reviewed first 5 notes.
- Intermediate band students did really well on their first playing test that reviewed the B Flat Major Scale
- Advanced band can play Battle Born, their parade piece, as well as a chromatic scale. They're now ready for their winter concert and festival music, in September!
- Advanced strings has learned two pieces already, and are well on their way to completing a 3rd piece.
SmartMusic Update
On Friday, all students were signed up for student accounts on SmartMusic. Since some students are confused about how this works, I thought I would clarify for all of you. In order to have playing tests on SmartMusic and use it in school, students need an account. This account does not require the $40 subscription. In order to practice at home, however, students must subscribe to the program, which is entirely optional. We will be using it in class rather regularly, and all material we work on will be available to students to practice at home, but only if they have the subscription. If students that do not purchase the home subscription want additional practice time or to retake a playing test on the software, they must schedule a time before or after school, or during lunch to use the school's subscription.
Practice Logs
Beginning this week, students will be required to track their practice time. They must keep accurate records so they can submit their practice time at the end of the week. Each Friday, students will need to go to www.cmsbands.org and click "submit practice log" on the front page. Once they fill out the form, I'll be able to read them and grade them over the weekend. Practice logs are due at 11:59 PM on Friday, even if they are absent. Here are a few guidelines that will help your students do them correctly:
- Practice for at least 4 days per week and at least 15 minutes on the days they practice.
- Total time practiced must be at least 100 minutes per week to receive full credit, with extra credit offered if students exceed that time.
- Help make sure students are practicing music that we are working on in class, with proper practice techniques (more on this later)
Since this is the first week, students may practice whatever they need to in order to feel like they've reached our goals in class. This also includes time spent watching the DVDs included in their method books if they're a beginner. Next week, I'll provide a list of what I'm asking each ensemble to practice. Let me know if you have any questions.
Car Wash is a Success!
A HUGE thank you to all parents and students who helped at the car wash. Also, thank you to those who brought food and water for the students. The kids had a good time and we raised $1000 to go towards uniform embroidery. Extra money will go towards cello storage racks and more music cubbies, which will be purchased if we meet our fundraising goal at the next event.

A Great Start
Dear Parents,
I found this newsletter to be a great success last year, so I'm continuing the newsletter as a way to keep you informed about everything we do in your student's band or strings class. With that said, welcome to a great year at CMS! The school has made some exciting changes to improve school culture and student success. As I begin my 3rd year of teaching at Carson Middle School, I'm feeling a great sense of enthusiasm, excitement, and positive morale from every single class. Here's what we accomplished during the first week:
These polos will be part of concert attire for beginning band, beginning strings, and concert band, and they're included with your band fee. I will also have these available for sale in the near future for those of you who do not have students in those ensembles. They will cost $15 each.
